It is important that all students behave in an appropriate matter. Using the Responsive Classroom method, we have been practicing how to do many procedures in our classroom as well as expected and unexpected behaviors. As always our goal at the Missituk is to be Safe, Responsible and Respectful. We discussed ways we can show those behaviors in class and in the school. From time to time students forget expected behaviors so we will revisit these behaviors again when needed.
When students behavior is consistent or is recognized from other teachers, we may celebrate as a class in various ways. We might have a free choice time, play a classroom game or have a fun energizer.
Students who misbehave will always be redirected and supported to make a better choice. This could include a visit the calming center in our classroom, taking a break or loss of privileges. If a behavior continues after redirection or there is a dangerous behavior a "Time To Reflect (TTR)" form will be given to the student explaining what the undesired behavior was. In most cases, the TTR form is just a communication between you and the teacher. This form is a record of the behavior that has been communicated to the family. The family responds that they are aware of the behavior by signing the pink copy and returning it to school the next day. In severe behaviors or multiple TTR forms received (3 or more) in a six week period, a student may miss recess to take time to reflect on their actions. A student form is completed with the support of a teacher to help the child think about the behavior, how it affect others and decide how to correct or remedy the situation.
Everyday students have the chance to show expected behaviors. All TTR forms are filed away (inactive) after six weeks. This means if a student has two TTR forms within a six week period, they start over with zero after the six weeks. Instead of the PBIS store, we will have a class celebration when such an event is earned.
